End of April

As usual the growing year has run away with me and my blog has suffered. But to this end, this year my allotment has not. Although the twitch is giving me a serious run for my money and I fully intend to cover the plot for some very long months this winter to try and beat it into submission. May I tell you all, and with a certain amount of pride, that this year has so far been the most successful on my own. I managed all my winter digging which at made me happy and cry with exhaustion in almost equal measure. But dig I did, until the job was done and then I rotovated with my little german electric rotovator. Of which I am very proud. Mostly, my seeds have germinated well this year, thankfully for a warm spring and I am currently in the process of getting them into the ground. The more sensitive plants are just germinating and I am pleased to tell you I have not had one failure on the Crown Prince pumpkins which is marvellous, as you only get six seeds in a packet! I still have one of those to eat and two butternut squash, they really are the most amazing produce to grow.

As you can see this year the lettuce are doing very nicely.

First of the asparagus and lettuce, with a free range egg from a neighbour. I’m just about to dash up to the plot this morning as I left a bunch of cut asparagus there last night! I must have been tired as I only noticed after i’d gone to bed!

And I have all my brassicas in.

Not much to see yet, but I am pleased to have done the work. Brussel sprouts, black kale and rainbow chard.

There is still much to do, but I am well on the way to a productive year.
